How did you learn your craft? I learned to crochet from my mother-in-law.

 What do you enjoy most about making these pieces? What I enjoy most is seeing how a simple thread can become something beautiful.

What is one thing you'd like someone wearing your piece to know? I hope that when you wear my work, you can feel the value of something made by hand—not only crochet, but all forms of handmade art. Behind every piece is the sincerity of a maker who hopes their work will be loved by many people.

How did you learn your craft? I learned my craft through hands-on teaching from master artisans, as well as through self-study and online videos.

What do you enjoy most about making these pieces? I enjoy the quiet of working on my own and the sense of satisfaction that comes from completing a woven piece.

What is one thing you'd like someone wearing your piece to know? I hope you are happy with my work and that your appreciation allows our craftsmanship to be seen and shared with others. Your support provides us with a source of income and allows us to continue our craft.

Benny — Leather Artisan, Banyuwangi, East Java

How did you learn your craft? I began learning my craft more than 20 years ago. When I was young, I worked for someone making keychains, sandals and bags. That is where I began learning how to make these pieces from leather.

What do you enjoy most about making these pieces? Leatherwork is not only a way for me to earn a living; it is also my passion. I’m proud that I can still create these pieces with my own hands in a time when so much is made using large machinery. I also enjoy creating new bag designs for customers, because every new piece gives me an opportunity to continue developing my skills.

What is one thing you'd like someone wearing your piece to know? Thank you for choosing something I have made by hand. I hope you love it. By wearing my work, you are also showing appreciation for the time, care and hard work that went into making it.

Beth — Designer & Maker, Central Coast, Australia

How did you learn your craft? Since I was a little girl, I’ve always loved cutting up my clothes, creating new designs and giving them a second life. A few years ago, I taught myself to crochet and completely fell in love with the craft. It feels like meditation to me and I love the feeling of flow. I’ve always felt deeply connected to the ocean, so naturally I began creating my own bikinis.

What do you enjoy most about making these pieces? I love bringing each piece together through shape, elastic, crystals, wooden beads, earthy tones and, of course, the iconic spiral. One of my favourite parts of Mahala is being able to highlight the work of other artisans and compensate them for sharing their craft with the world.

What is one thing you'd like someone wearing your piece to know? Mahala is rooted in reciprocity with the earth.  Creating slowly, choosing thoughtfully, and making special pieces to be kept, worn and loved. I hope your piece becomes a friend you share many memories with ꨄ︎
